Creative Hobbies For Creative Students: Cross-Stitching

Each of us strives for beauty in one way or another. One of the students likes to walk in the park and admire nature, another is a frequent visitor to exhibitions and fine art museums. But what if you want to paint a picture yourself, and the brush stubbornly does not want to leave the right traces on the canvas? For such, there is a great alternative – cross stitch! You don’t need to be a great artist to create a wonderful piece of furniture, which, moreover, can be a great gift for loved ones. Student life is quite busy, so I like to pay someone to write my paper, so I have more free time for my hobbies. It also allows me to spend more time with my family.

Characteristics of cross stitch art: what should a student consider

Everyone knows what a cross-stitch is and what it looks like. Most likely, you even tried to do this once at school.

The process of cross-stitch requires perseverance, like any other technique of working with a needle and threads. You need to be completely focused, and not get distracted to get the pattern right.

It should be taken into account that this type of embroidery loads the eye muscles very much, so if there are problems with vision, it is better not to force your eyes and choose another activity. Any student has enough workload as it is.

Since this hobby is insanely popular among needlewomen, stores are filled with the necessary tools to the brim. Moreover, you can buy a ready-made embroidery kit, where all the materials will be collected.

The cost of such sets is quite high. Therefore, a student may not be able to afford such a purchase. Nevertheless, this is a great idea for a gift to someone passionate about this kind of needlework!

If you have an exclusive idea for a painting (for example, you want to embroider a photo of your favorite dog with a cross), you will have to work out the scheme first. You can do this with the help of special applications for embroidery online.

What you need to buy for cross stitching

Here is the required set:

Embroidery frame. Which ones to take depends on finances and the degree of passion. If you just want to try a new hobby, you shouldn’t spend too much. You can buy cheap plastic hoops for a few dollars. The diameter, as well as the shape, can be different, and it cannot be said that one of them is more convenient, it all depends on the work that you are going to embroider. There are also embroidery frames and whole embroidery machines. But this is for those who have already made sure of their loyalty to the craft because it is quite expensive and requires certain skills and experience.

Embroidery threads. Famous Floss. There are many palettes (DMC, Gamma, Madeira, etc.) The most popular palette is DMC. As for the price, students can afford Gamma more. When developing the scheme independently, the pattern will show a set of colors that will need to be purchased. If you embroider according to the scheme from the magazine, both the palette and the numbers you need will be indicated there. Ready-made schemes can also be downloaded for free on the Internet.

Needle for embroidery. It is slightly different from the usual sewing machine — not so sharp and with a thick ear. There are different types designed specifically for embroidery with wool, metallic threads, etc. As a rule, needles are sold in sets, but you can buy only one.

Canvas. This is a special material for embroidery. It can be of different densities. The most popular is Aida 14. You can buy a blank of a certain size, for example, 50 × 50 cm or you can buy a whole piece of the desired length. The shades of the canvas can be different, up to pure black. The cost of a small piece is less than a few dollars.

Scissors. You can use an ordinary manicure, and you can buy very stylish vintage scissors for cutting threads.

Organizer for threads. They are used to carefully distribute all the threads by numbers, signing them, and not to confuse anything in the process. Such a thing costs about 5 dollars, but you can also build it yourself from some cardboard.

Where to start

If you have purchased a ready-made set, then with consideration of the scheme. If you bought the threads yourself, then with their sorting using an organizer. All colors must be signed.

Then you need to mark the middle of the canvas, folding it in four for this. It is from this point (and not from the corner, as many people think) that it is better to start the process.

Next, we charge the thread, according to the scheme, and can go right in. We sew crosses carefully.

Here are some tips for further work:

  • Make crosses in the same direction so that they do not differ from each other. If one is embroidered from left to right, and the other on the contrary, the work will look sloppy.
  • Be extremely careful and do not make mistakes in calculations. Everything should be clear here, as in accounting. The wrong number of crosses in one single row will cause a lot of problems, and you will have to unpack everything.
  • Keep the work in a special closed box. Especially if you have pets or younger siblings. These comrades are very fond of doing an audit of this kind of thing.
  • Are you annoyed, angry? It’s time to rest. Tomorrow, when you calm down, you will figure out why the embroidery does not fit with the scheme, and you will easily fix everything.

By the way, you can embroider not only paintings. Interior items and accessories can also be decorated with embroidery. You can use the finished product to decorate walls, chairs, boxes, or anything else. The most important thing here is to have fun and enjoy every step of the way.
