The average monthly electricity bill for Americans is $114.44. If you do the math, that works out to be over $1,300 a year!
Don’t want to pay so much? You don’t have to—there are many things that you can do to keep costs down.
Interested? Want to know how you can save some money on your utility bills? If so, you’re on the right page.
We’ll be going over a few tips in our ‘how to lower energy bill’ guide below. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Use LEDs Instead of Incandescent Bulbs
LEDs are the most energy-efficient lighting product that you can get; they produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs. Not only that, but they use at least 75% less energy.
Incandescent lights, on the other hand, are extremely inefficient. For one thing, more than 90% of the energy is wasted as heat; only 10% goes toward the light.
Also, they don’t last nearly as long as LEDs. A typical incandescent bulb has a lifespan of around 1,000 hours whereas an LED will last up to 25,000 hours.
2. Change Your Laundry Habits
Washing machines are energy hogs; they can use up to 1,500 watts of energy per hour. Fortunately, there are ways to bring that number down. For example, it helps to use cold water.
Not only will that lower your energy bill (it won’t have to use energy to heat water), but it’ll also be better for your clothes. And make a habit of washing full loads. After all, it’ll use the same amount of energy no matter how many things you wash.
The same goes for the dryer. If anything, it uses even more energy than the washer, so try not to use it that often. Consider air-drying your laundry instead when possible. For example, you can hang them on a clothesline or use a drying rack.
3. Install a Solar Panel System
Installing solar panels will allow you to harness the sun’s energy. More specifically, they’ll convert it into thermal or electrical energy, which you can use to power your home.
The only drawback is the price. On average, you can expect to spend around $12,000 to $14,000 for a solar panel system (after federal tax incentives). Depending on where you live, however, there may be other tax credits that you can take advantage of.
And we highly recommend that you hire a professional such as Blue Raven Solar for the installation—it’s not something that you want to do yourself.
