Return to Yoshi’s Island 64: About the Game

Return to Yoshi’s Island 64 is still to be released in 2022. At the same time, it is believed that the game will be one of the most successful and popular ones in the series. Numerous platforms and reviewers set their hopes on it and one can find positive feedback on the Internet. But why is it so anticipated and popular? Let’s try to find out.

First of all, it is necessary to mention that the whole Mario and Yoshi series has existed since the 1980s, which made it a legend among people who played it then. Like many other games of that time, it brought a lot of fun and pleasure to the lives of gamers and Nintendo was and still remains one of the main suppliers of it. It is really nice that we can still download n64 roms and experience those emotions again.

About the Series

The Yoshi’s Island series is one of Nintendo’s most important platforming series and has long earned the honorable right to be on a par with games about Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong. The previous release in the Yoshi’s Island series was released a long time ago, back in 2014, so the new part can be called a long-awaited one!

The first game in the Yoshi’s Island series is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island for Super Nintendo, which was released in 1995. It is dedicated to the adventures of funny dinosaurs from the Yoshi tribe, which Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their other friends, who are well known to players from the New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3D series, love to ride. Subsequently, the Yoshi’s Island series split from Super Mario Bros and took shape as a separate brand – as expected, with main and auxiliary games.

A bit of history: in 1997, Yoshi’s Story was released for the Nintendo 64, in 2002 Yoshi’s Island was finalized and ported to the Game Boy Advance, and in 2005-2006, two more games were released – an offshoot of Yoshi Touch & Go and a sequel to Yoshi’s Island DS. Then the Yoshi did without personal games for a long time, but the appearance of these dinosaurs in Super Mario Galaxy 2 was positively perceived by players.

The new part had to wait for almost eight years. Interestingly, Yoshi’s New Island is a direct sequel to the old 1995 game SMW2: Yoshi’s Island. Like Yoshi’s Island DS, it develops the well-known story of toddler brothers in a new way.

The plot of the previous game in the series can be called truly childish and it copies the stories of other games in the Yoshi’s Island series with only minor changes. The naive story of how the Yoshi clan and Baby Mario defeated Kamek, Baby Bowser, and other villains is designed, like the game itself, primarily for a young audience. Even the gameplay feels like a light version of any modern platformer, so those who like challenging jumps, ferocious bosses, and don’t like excessive childishness should pay attention to the 3DS games Rayman Origins and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

It is still not completely clear what we should expect in a new game. A playable demo gives us only a glimpse of what will be available in it. The whole new world, interesting mechanics, and extended graphics will make the new game truly special. It might be interested both for those who want to experience the nostalgia and for those who are interested in qualitative platformers. Either way, it will be a good possibility to find out what Nintendo has to offer us this time.
